What is IDL

“Students and teachers see and hear each other and interact almost as if they were in the same classroom.”IDL program, Confucius Insitute of KU
CIKU instructor teaches high school students in IDL program

Students at remote sites integrated with their instructors and students at other sites via IDL videoconferencing technology (Interactive Distance learning). IDL allows for live, real-time interaction. Students and teachers see and hear each other and interact almost as if they were in the same classroom.

CIKU instructors use this technology to instruct students at elementary and high schools in Kansas during the academic year. CIKU Chinese Instructors are experiences in the use of DL and have learned to adapt best practices in foreign language instruction to the IDL context. IDL technology and pedagogical techniques allow for efficient use of teacher resources. One teacher can provide instruction to students in many different schools throughout the school day. IDL allows distance learning classes to be scheduled within the exiting bell schedules at schools. This allows students in small towns and other areas where Chinese teachers are not available to gain access to this critical language.
