We love Chinese films! At the Confucius Institute of the University of Kansas, we see Chinese films, both feature films and documentaries, as fascinating windows into Chinese culture.

To be scheduled during 2014. Suggestions for films welcome! (We prefer films that show some aspect of contemporary or historical society in China worthy of discussion.)

For the past several years, the Institute has screened Chinese films, primarily as part of our annual Chinese Film Festival. In most cases, the screening has included discussion led by expert(s).

After shock

After Shock (唐山大地震)

Aftershock is a 2010 Chinese dramatic film produced by Huayi Brothers. The film depicts the epic story of a family separated as a result of the Great Tangshan Earthquake of 1976.

CJ7 (长江七号)

CJ7 is a science fiction film starring, co-written, co-produced, and directed by Stephen Chow. The film tells the story of a poor Chinese laborer/single father and his son who learn important lessons about family after the son gets a strange new “toy”.

Getting home

Getting Home (落叶归根)

Getting Home is a black comedy/drama about a farmer who promises to bring home the body of his friend, who died far from home. The film was produced by Filmko Entertainment and Beijjing Jinqianshengshi Culture Media Company and distributed by Fortissimo Films.

Happy times hotel

Happy Times Hotel (幸福时光)

Happy times is a tragic comedy following an old laid-off worker who dreams of getting married. After he meets a divorcee with two children, she demands a lavish wedding and that he find a job for her blind stepdaughter. He creates an imaginary hotel (“Happy Times”) to keep both mother and daughter happy.
